Pinecone to launch venture studio in Sweden
Pinecone Ventures is expanding its innovative company-building model into Sweden, forming a strategic partnership that will bridge the gap between the Norwegian and Swedish startup ecosystems.
Strategic Partnerships and Fundraising
Norwegian Pinecone Ventures will own approximately half of the Swedish company. A capital raise of SEK 30–50 million is planned for 2025 to finance the development of new, innovative companies.
Unique in THE Swedish Startup Ecosystem
Jesper Vendel, partner and managing director of the new Pinecone Ventures in Sweden, explains their decision to collaborate with Pinecone: “We were impressed by what they have achieved in a short time with limited capital. Additionally, we quickly realized that we share the same perspective on how to build companies. Pinecone’s model is very smart and innovative.”
Vendel also highlights Pinecone’s unique position in the Swedish market: “Sweden has a strong and large startup ecosystem, yet there are very few studios in Sweden, and none that operate the way Pinecone does.”
Bridging TWO Startup Ecosystems
“There is a surprising disconnect between the Norwegian and Swedish startup ecosystems,” says Vendel. “By bringing a Norwegian concept to Sweden, we can help bridge this gap. We see enormous potential in both Norway and Sweden to succeed on a global scale.”
Global Ambitions
Alvin Dammann Leer, founder of Norwegian Pinecone Ventures, unveils broader plans:
“Sweden is just the first step – we plan to expand into several other countries in the future. This is a crucial part of our model, where cross-border synergies are central. Our new partners in Sweden will also contribute to further international scaling.”
A Distinct Approach to Company Building
Leer emphasizes what sets Pinecone apart from other studios: “We primarily build tech companies, think internationally from day one, and focus on impact (environmental or societal). We consider ourselves a ‘SWAT team’ of experts who step in to lay the foundation for a company’s great success.”
The Right Partners
Leer believes they have been fortunate in finding the right partners:
“We are thrilled that our network introduced us to Jesper Vendel, who quickly recognized the journey Pinecone Ventures is on. Jesper’s experience and expertise will be crucial for a successful expansion into Sweden and other countries in the group.”
Everything fell into place when Jesper introduced Andreas Hedin, who will co-lead Pinecone in Sweden with Vendel. Andreas is an experienced entrepreneur with a long track record of building, scaling, and investing in companies successfully.
Good for “Norway Inc.”
While Leer emphasizes that the decision to enter Sweden is not a reaction to the current government’s tax and business policies, he adds: “The timing is excellent because ‘Norway Inc.’ needs all the synergies and collaboration it can get with startup environments in other countries, especially now when we have a government that seems to be incapable of seeing the bigger picture of how long-term value is created in society.”
The launch of Pinecone Ventures in Sweden marks the beginning of an exciting new phase for the company and promises increased collaboration and innovation in the Nordic startup landscape.
